Patient

Dr. Jessen, he was great! I’ve heard other people who have had work done by him. They always speak so highly of him, and I just have to join them and saying he was great!

Patient

I am so grateful to Dr. Jessen for his skill and care for me during my surgery. I had no problems at all and felt wonderful…I had some questions about my medication, the office called me right back to help me understand what I was taking. Thank you, Jessen Oral Surgery. I would and have sent all my family and friends for surgery there..

Patient

Dr. Jessen and his staff are very friendly and I have been extremely satisfied with the care I have received. I have visited this office many times and would recommend it to anyone!

What Is Oral Pathology?

Oral pathology is the process of determining if a lesion, ulcer, or abnormality in your mouth is
cancerous, linked to a preventable bacterial disease, or simply a benign pathology. Although many times Dr. Jessen and his team will be able to quickly determine whether or not your oral pathology is anything to worry about, occasionally you may need to have a more thorough examination.

Dr. Jessen may determine that your oral pathology is problematic, and in order to make sure that you receive the care you need your pathology may need to be tested to determine exactly what the problem is.

The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink in color. Any alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer.

Signs of A Pathological Process or Cancerous Growth

  • Reddish patches (erythroplasia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth
  • A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
  • A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth
  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness and/or difficulty in chewing or swallowing

These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face, and/or neck. Pain does not always occur with pathology, and curiously, is not often associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer. We would recommend performing an oral cancer self-examination monthly. Remember that your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems. Do not ignore suspicious lumps or sores.

Please contact us so we can assist you with any questions or concerns. Jessen Oral Surgery is committed to doing everything we can to make sure that you receive correct and timely treatment for any oral conditions you may develop. Part of that commitment means helping you
